This Sucks!
So I basically got three letters today, one by actual mail and two by e-mail that each read basically the same:
"Thank you four your interest in the position with _______. As a result of current economic uncertainty, we have chosen not to fill the advertised position at this time. Your resume will be kept on file for six months for future reference"
STUPID Economy! I NEED A JOB!!! anyone in need of a micropaleontologist/geologist/oceanographer???

61 Nobel Laureates released a letter endorsing Barack Obama for President
September 25, 2008
We are convinced that Senator Barack Obama is such a leader, and we urge you to join us in supporting him.
During the administration of George W. Bush, vital parts of our country's scientific enterprise have been damaged by stagnant or declining federal support. The government's scientific advisory process has been distorted by political considerations. As a result, our once dominant position in the scientific world has been shaken and our prosperity has been placed at risk. We have lost time critical for the development of new ways to provide energy, treat disease, reverse climate change, strengthen our security, and improve our
economy.
We have watched Senator Obama's approach to these issues with admiration. We especially applaud his emphasis during the campaign on the power of science and technology to enhance our nation's competitiveness. In particular, we support the measures he plans to take – through new initiatives in education and training, expanded research funding, an unbiased process for obtaining scientific advice, and an appropriate balance of basic and applied research – to meet the nation's and the world's most urgent needs.
Senator Obama understands that Presidential leadership and federal investments in science and technology are crucial elements in successful governance of the world's leading country. We hope you will join us as we work together to ensure his election in November.

fat pregnant and single. . .
no not me. . . .
so some of the students/tecs and some other people who works with one of the student's boyfriends, and myself were at this coffee shop last night to eat dinner and drink beer (they serve dinner and lazy magnolia beer :D mmm in addition to the normal coffee shop stuff). . .well we started talking about this that and the other when ( and it was appropriate to the topic, i just dont remember how) I bring up the fact that Mississippi is the fattest state in the Uninted States. So we high five each other for being #1. Then this guy next to me brings up the fact that Mississippi has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the US. More number one high fives are done. Kevin mentiones thats cause they are all married early, the other guy says nope that doesnt happen till after they have a few kids. . . so what do i do
Throw up my arms and say " we are fat, pregnant and single WOOHOO" and more high fives are had by all. . .
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO NOTE THAT I AM NOT FROM THIS STATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM ONLY HERE FOR SCHOOL!

GUSTAV does not want to play nice
Gustav does not appear to be willing to play nice. Current predicitons he will hit the southern delta between monday and tuesday with the eye of the storm completely on land by 2pm on tuesday. He is also going slow. VERY SLOW! Now most might think oh good the hurricane is going slow that is good, well actually that is really bad. The hurricane is moving North/West very slowly the spinning is completly different, the slower it goes the longer it will have time to sit over the gulf water. The gulf water is very hot, this is what feeds a hurricane, so the slower it goes over this hot water the larger and faster swirling it is likely to be. Also they are expecting it to stall off the coast a little bit, stall as in just hang out off the coast. This is really bad, meaning water will get pushed up onto the coast a good while and before the hurricane gets there. AKA massive flooding. And since I am slightly north west of the current predicted landfall, that means devistation. Because the winds on the eastern side of a hurricane blow landward, you get the largest amunts of storm surge to the right of the storm and because of some other physics type things that I dont feel like getting into (ive explained this a gazillion times to the first years) it is also the area of the largest winds. If you are going to be hit by a hurricane down here the left side of the eye is the place to be, winds blow off shore so you dont get much in the way of storm surge, and thats where the weaker winds are.
I am getting the hell out of Dodge and heading to the "mountains" of atlanta tomorrow afternoon. That way if the hurricane speeds up i am already out of the way and i dont have to deal with traffic. Plus i want to sleep in on saturday and not have to get up and evacuate early saturday morning.
Atleast if we get killed by GUSTAV, its a good fierce name. Not some crappy name like Nana or Wilfred, who would want to be pummeled by a hurricane Wilfread?

GUSTAV

Looks like i may be evacuating this weekend. Now it still has a chance to turn west or east, but as of now, and as of the computer models it looks like I will be evacuating this weekend. I could use a road trip. Only negative thing, Luz our columbian will be evacuating with me (thats not the bad thing), she has just learned to drive in the US, has barley been on the interstate and the traffic in Atlanta is CRAZY!!! She will be following me up, hopefully the 80mph does not scare her to much!

We have such a great president. . . . (oh and by the way, we are the second biggest polluter, China is number one)
President George Bush: 'Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter'
George Bush surprised world leaders with a joke about his poor record on the environment as he left the G8 summit in Japan.
The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter."
He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.
Mr Bush, whose second and final term as President ends at the end of the year, then left the meeting at the Windsor Hotel in Hokkaido where the leaders of the world's richest nations had been discussing new targets to cut carbon emissions.

sort of disappointing. He would be great if you were chilling on the beach with a fire and just sitting listening to him play. However, he doesnt do much on stage so really not that entertaining to watch. So i just sat and chilled and listened to his set, so not a lot of pics.

they hippies were not happy with kanye west
Kanye pissed off the hippies big time!!!!! Origionally Kanye was supposed to play on the secondary stage in between jack johnson and pearl jam's set (around 8pm or so), however they changed his set to be on the big stage at 2:45 am (a few hours after pearl jam). I am thinking he pitched a fit about being scheduled to play the secondary stage and not the main stage. . . anyways. . . . So 2:45am rolls around and he does not start playing (mind you I am and the phil lesh show, so this is all according to everyone else). Kanye doesn't come on till 4:40am, and only plays half a set and not the entire thing. a couple of the stages had been off all day (time wise) and seeing as how the concert is sort of a 24 hour kind of thing, everyones times just get pushed and they all play full sets. Kanye's people blame pearl jam (who played an hour longer than they were supposed too -- and it was an amazing extra hour totally worth it), for his being late. . . well if that was the case why didnt he still play an entire set, and after pearl jam got off there was still 2 1/2 hours for them to set up his show, which in my book should be more than enough time! Pearl jam only had an hour between them and jack johnson. So the hippies were outraged and the entire next day i head things like "kanye hates white people", "Kanye hates hippies" and so on and so on. So kanye has definitely lost some fans. . . . i was never one so nothing has changed on my end

BONNAROO
Bonnaroo was amazing!!!!! I had so much fun and saw so many cool bands, totally worth it. There was some issues with the person I went with being a total dick and ass to me, so i just stopped hanging out with him and wondered my own way and made various "friends" along the way. Some of the best times were: dancing in the rain with bill (one of my new friends) to My morning jacket at 2:00am, watching the sunset with a group of hippies one of which (derek, or so i think) kept calling me princess, sitting around a large hookah (I did not participate in that) listening to the "neighbors" jamming and playing various songs late into the night (guitar, drums, mandolin, didgeridoo, harmonica were some of the instruments being played), laying down in the shade of a large tree while willie nelson played in the background. . . i could go on and on. . . . .
anyways the list of bands/shows i saw is (in order of appearance):
Whate made milwaukee famous
Janeeane garofalo and Bike birbiglia featuring leo allen
Fire/side show at the something else stage
dark star orchestra
drive by truckers
scissormen
umphrey's mcgee
les claypool
the swell season
willie nelson
metallica
my morning jacket
Two gallants
sharon jones and the dap-kings
gogol bordello
cat powers
ben folds
zappa plays zappa
iron and wine
Ben solvie
the everybodyfields
jack johnson
pearl jam
phil lesh and friends
serena ryder
yonder mountain string band
aimee mann
an acousic performance with larry campbell, jackie green, phil lesh and teresa williams
robert plant and alison krauss featuirng bone burnett
pat green
derek trucks and susan tedeschi soul stew revival
widespread panic
All and all everyone was amazing, some more so than others. . . check out iron and wine, gogol bordello and cat powers, they were absolutely amazing.
Pics are to follow . . . .

dissapointing
So i got a letter today from the british geological survey telling me that i did not get selected to interview for the job i applied for. Sort of disappointed, not that i was expecting to get the thing but i would have at least liked to interview. I wish they would day more like why i did not get selected for the interview. . . such as you dont have enough experience or something, that would at least make me understand vs, nope just not good enough ;( oh well. . . . If you know of anyone in need of a micropaleontologist who looks at foraminifera let me know.

hum. . . .
Hum. . . so i am looking up jobs. . . read the following position, its in Nigeria. . . i found it rather amusing
Job Responsibilities Collection of microfossils for biostragaphic analysis. This help to delineate the environment of deposition and to infer the age of the the rock where the samples are being collected.these are all useful to delineate the oil bearin capacity of the rock.
Job Requirements The education requirements for the program are purely scientific. You need the basic knowledge of chemistry, physics, mathematics, English language and biology to qualify for Geology for the undergraduate degree program and the the minimum of upper credit to study master program say, Master program in Micropaleontology aspect of the geology field.
Uppers The best part of the job is tha is quiet rewarding in term of money (salary). It give you the opportunity to travel far and wide. It would also enable you to appreciate nature a lot.
Downers The worst part is that you have to be apart from your family for about 3 weeks out of every month. One also run the risk of encountering dazangerous animals in the forest while collecting samples.
Lifestyle The lifestyle is from office to bed.the working hours is quiet long.there is only room for socialising every last week of the month.the part of this work actually is offshore and as such one can enjoy himself by enjoying his work
| Compensation The compensaton is rewarding, $12,000 per month. There is staff residents for those tha care or otherwise will reive house allowance. | Advice to Jobseekers The advice for the job seekers, get a very good undergraduate grade, at least upper credit, with a master degree in oil/gas or micropaleontology then enjoy yourself doing the work, don't opt for the job because of its rewads but because you love it. The oil/gas industry owns a good prospect in the future. |

Hum. . . wonder if it means something
I arrive at school today to find that everyone is standing outside in the parking lot. So, I park my car and go see whats going on, the fire alarm is going off. No one knows if this is a drill, test or real thing. A minute or two goes buy and the firemen show up, one actually puts on the gear (hard hat and all) and runs into the building, the idea that this is a drill begins to diminish. So we continue to stand outside, another fire truck shows up and the guy runs inside. We continue to wait (mind you it is 90 degrees outside, not counting the humidity). So we wait and wait for a good while (30 min) and finally the fireman comes out and waves for us to come in. So none of us has any idea as to why the fire alarm went off or anything. I didn't want to get out of bed this morning and I am thinking that getting out was really a bad idea. Hopefully the rest of the day goes alright.
